Arthur I. Miller
Nick was delighted to be joined on the show by acclaimed and bestselling British Scientific Author Arthur I. Miller who shared his views on Science and Spirituality. He discussed the inspirations for his book
Deciphering the Cosmic Number: The Strange Friendship of Wolfgang Pauli and Carl Jung, which Nick commented was an absolutely fascinating read, even for those like him who don't necessarily understand all the scientific terms or theories.
Arthur is a
Professor Emeritus at University College, London
and explained his background in Atomic Physics and how he took Philosophy courses, Elementary Particle Physics and Quantum Theory, and how he wanted to learn more about Visualisation in Science.
He told the fascinating story of his research into 2 articles by 2 different men - the famous psychoanalyst Carl Jung and groundbreaking physicist Wolfgang Pauli, which led him to write the extraordinary story of these two famous men and their struggle to quantify the unconscious. Arthur explained that Pauli believed that mysticism would appear again in Physics but in a different form. Quantum mechanics discussed dead matter but couldn't discuss other great matters such as consciousness, life and death, love and hate etc. Pauli also got a lot of his theories from dreams and he went to see Jung for psychological help. Jung reintroduced Alchemy into 20th century thought and believed that 4 is a magic number. Although Jung analysed Pauli's dreams, he had to remain anonymous when discussed as had his scientific reputation to protect and couldn't be associated with mysticism or eastern religious thought - and of course even today there is usually a separation between Science v Spirituality (although Nick believes that many people are now embracing them as actually exploring and explaining the same universal issues, but just from different perspectives - and it at least seems as though Arthur believes there is room for both Scientific and Spiritual enquiry).
Arthur pointed out that Einstein also embraced Intuition and Visualisation which was important to scientific discovery, and Pauli and Jung even discussed ESP (Extra Sensory Perception) - but Jung saying it was 'collective unconscious', similarly to Freud who believed that there were parts of consciousness that couldn't be attributed to personal experience but to the collective.
Arthur shared his intrigue in the turn of the 20th century and the theories of the Zeitgeist - the Avant Garde movement in art especially by Picasso, whose concerns were with the nature of space and time, and Einstein's theories which were also concerned with space and time but looked at in very different ways - as shared in another book Einstein, Picasso: Space, time and the beauty that causes havoc.
Arthur concluded that he believes that there is a place for mysticism in science and feels there lots of things that science still can't explain and so he keeps an open mind!
